By Phil Mattera, Dirt Diggers Digest President Obama's declaration that the federal government is in charge of the response to the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico is apparently meant to deflect Katrina comparisons and show that his administration is fully engaged. With that P.R. mission accomplished, Obama now needs to turn to the question of what to do about BP.

The Louisiana Environmental Action Network reports that British Petroleum is threatening to fire fishermen hired to help with the oil spill cleanup for using respirators or other safety equipment that wasn't provided by the company. While bits and pieces of the Gulf oil spill have already reached shore, new federal maps show that the larger floating mass of oil generated by the disaster is poised to strike the coast over the next three days.
