May 12, 2022 - The recent leak of a Supreme Court draft opinion showed that the justices have voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 case that guaranteed the right to an abortion. If the draft stands, legal abortion would remain widely available in only two Southern states. 

April 22, 2022 - Over 100 anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced in Southern legislatures this year, the latest application of an old Republican strategy to win votes by bullying a vulnerable minority. Facing South recently spoke with LGBTQ advocates in states around the South to find out how they're responding.   

April 7, 2022 - To address the region's shockingly high rate of pregnancy-related deaths, a growing number of Southern states are expanding their Medicaid programs or launching Medicaid pilot initiatives to cover the services of doulas — nonclinical professionals who provide holistic support during all stages of pregnancy.   

March 11, 2022 - A new report from the Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center finds that the number of U.S. hate groups fell for the third year in a row — but says that's not necessarily good news, as such views are now moving from the fringe into the mainstream. It also found that hate groups are becoming more concentrated in the Southern states.  

February 11, 2022 - In December, the Food and Drug Administration permanently allowed the drugs for medication abortions to be delivered to patients by mail — but most Southern states require such abortions be done in the presence of a doctor. And now Republican state lawmakers in Georgia and South Carolina are considering bills that target that safe form of abortion care and would give patients disinformation about it.

January 28, 2022 - Rural hospitals were able to survive 2021 with special pandemic assistance, but some aid is set to expire by the end of this year. Advocates say state Medicaid expansion could help rural hospitals confront the worsening staffing crisis and provide much-needed care in their communities.

December 17, 2021 - Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi are among the states with the lowest vaccination rates. Grassroots organizations there are partnering with public health officials to battle misinformation and distrust in rural, Latino, and Black communities — but elected officials in those states aren't making their jobs any easier.
