April 7, 2015 - In a letter to Duke CEO Lynn Good, an African-American minister and an environmental advocate criticize the utility's campaign to block the shift to solar power by trying to convince black community leaders that it hurts the poor -- while at the same time fighting legislation to make solar power more affordable.

July 11, 2014 - Clean-energy advocates are battling Duke Energy's plan to cut payments to homeowners with grid-tied solar panels for the excess power they sell back to the company. Meanwhile, a major investment bank says the falling price of solar panels and battery storage could encourage large numbers of U.S. homeowners and businesses to abandon utilities altogether and go off-grid.

March 26, 2014 - Watchdog groups are raising concerns about calls to move coal ash from wet impoundments into dry landfills, warning of inevitable leakage from landfills that are typically located in low-income and minority communities. Instead, they propose storing the waste above ground in concrete vaults on power plant property.

February 18, 2014 - Following Duke Energy's massive coal ash spill into the Dan River, Gov. Pat McCrory (R) has come under scrutiny for his close ties to the Charlotte, N.C.-based utility giant. Other key members of his administration have connections to the company, too.

June 18, 2013 - A utility watchdog and its hired expert scoured Duke Energy rate-hike filings and uncovered numerous instances where the company inappropriately charged customers for things like political contributions and a sports team sponsorship. They're calling on state regulators to fine Duke at least $5 million for the violations.

March 4, 2013 - NC WARN is running full-page ads in North Carolina newspapers calling on Gov. Pat McCrory to disclose exactly how much stock he holds in Duke Energy, his longtime employer, and to recuse himself from making appointments to the state regulatory commission that oversees the company.

February 14, 2013 - The North Carolina governor may soon get to appoint all members of the N.C. Utilities Commission -- even though he's heavily invested in the state's largest regulated utility. Now a watchdog group is calling on him to come clean about just how big those holdings are.
