Justin Pearson is a native of Memphis, Tennessee, who was elected to represent the state’s 86th House District in a January 2023 special election. He previously founded an advocacy group that successfully fought plans to build a crude oil pipeline through the city’s poor Black neighborhoods. On April 6, 2023, the state House voted to expel him and his colleague Justin Jones for participating in a protest on the House floor calling for stricter gun laws following a mass shooting at a Nashville elementary school.
