Allan Gurganus is from Rocky Mount, North Carolina. His short fiction has appeared in The Atlantic, The Paris Review, Harper’s, and The New Yorker. He has received Stanford University’s Wallace Stegner Fellowship and two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. This essay appeared in Literary Outtakes (Ballantine, 1990). (1991)
