Clean water advocates have filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the U.S. Coast Guard over its refusal to release public records about a chronic leak from Taylor Energy oil wells off the Louisiana coast. Caused by an underwater mudslide during Hurricane Ivan, the spill has been fouling Gulf waters since 2004.

A large oil sheen in the Gulf of Mexico reported by watchdogs as far back as August 2011 has been tied to BP's failed Macondo well. Congressional leaders are demanding answers from the company about the ongoing oil release, and they also want to ensure BP pays fully for the damages caused by its 2010 disaster.

We've all seen the dramatic videos of helicopter rescues. At the latest count, they have saved nearly 3000 people. Apparently, the Coast Guard is the only federal agency that didn't sit around waiting for some politician to get back from vacation to tell them to go out there and save lives. Good for them.
