November 17, 2023 - In the 2023 elections, voters across the South faced difficulties including long lines, ballot shortages, and registration issues. Suppressive voting legislation and other structural barriers could exacerbate these issues as the 2024 election cycle swings into motion.

March 30, 2023 - The nonprofit Electronic Registration Information Center was formed and is led by a bipartisan group of state election officials to help member states maintain accurate voter rolls. Seven states have quit ERIC in the past year as the far right has spread disinformation about it, but Republican election officials in a number of Southern states have reaffirmed their commitment to the group.

January 12, 2023 - After another contentious U.S. Senate runoff election in Georgia, state officials are reckoning with a cumbersome and expensive system that's rooted in Jim Crow, and that burdens voters and taxpayers.

December 2, 2022 - Mega-donors have spent millions of dollars supporting election deniers for federal and state offices in the South, while Republican-controlled states have launched law enforcement units aimed at fueling the deniers' narrative. But all that spending so far hasn't translated into big wins for deniers in key positions.

April 7, 2022 - Republican lawmakers in Florida and Georgia passed legislation this year to establish “election police" to fight voter fraud, despite no evidence any widespread fraud has occurred. Voting rights advocates say the measures serve only to intimidate communities of color and further damage Americans' confidence in elections.

September 1, 2021 - Automatic voter registration has dramatically expanded the electorate in states including Georgia, but Republican lawmakers have targeted the policy for elimination.

May 20, 2021 - Following an attempt to overturn the 2020 election results by far-right extremists, Republican lawmakers have introduced measures in Southern states and elsewhere across the country that could open the door to partisan election interference and vote manipulation.
