BP's rainbows of death (video)

bp_rainbow_wathen.jpgEarlier this week, Hurricane Creekkeeper John Wathen of Alabama and pilot Tom Hutchings of SouthWings flew over the Gulf Coast to BP's spewing oil rig to shoot video of the ongoing catastrophe.

Heading out into the Gulf, they saw oil covering the water as far as the eye can see, and massive fires attempting to burn it off. At 23 miles out, they spotted a dark sheen -- a rainbow of deep purple, maroon, blue.

"Certainly nothing can live in these rainbows of death that cover the entire horizon," Wathen says in his narration.

As he and Hutchings headed toward Louisiana to fly over ground zero, they spotted movement in the oil.

"As we moved closer, we saw this pod of dolphins, obviously struggling just to breathe," Wathen says.

They also saw a sperm whale swimming in the oil, and another sizable pod of dolphins -- some in their death throes, some already dead.

"It seemed to be that they were raising their heads and looking at the fires," he says, "wondering, 'Why is my world burning down around me? Why would humans do this to me?'"
