White House call-in day for sustainable energy
A day after delivering an inaugural address in which he acknowledged that "the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet," President Barack Obama will be getting an earful from citizens who want to make sure he takes quick action to address the problem.
Today CLEAN -- a collaboration of state and local organizations interested in implementing a new, more sustainable national energy policy -- is holding a national call-in day to the White House. Callers will be asking President Obama to include in the economic stimulus package $500 billion over three years for energy efficiency and renewable energy -- and no subsidies whatsoever for the coal or nuclear industries.
"We seek policies that will protect our environment, cease and reverse global warming, disentangle the U.S. from unstable regions of the world, and create a new energy economy that promises jobs and a sustainable and equitable economic prosperity," according to a statement from the group, which includes organizations across the South.
CLEAN is asking people to begin calling the White House this morning at (202) 456-1414. For more information about the CLEAN initiative and for a script of what callers are being asked to say, click here.
