Gustav Coverage: Katrina network calls on solidarity and support for Gulf Coast residents
The Katrina Information Network (KIN), a coalition of social justice groups in the Gulf and across the country, is asking for people to take action today to help ensure a just recovery in the wake of Hurricane Gustav. From KIN:
Three years later, people are still struggling to recover from Katrina. Mismanagement by FEMA coupled with a leadership crisis and failed capacity at the American Red Cross has meant continued hardship for Katrina survivors as dollars and supplies targeted for recovery have been misspent or appropriated. Immigrant communities and non-native English speakers remain isolated from services. As Gustav approached, undocumented workers brought to the Gulf in Katrina's wake to help rebuild the region were forced to weigh the need for safety and evacuation against the fear of immigration raids and checkpoints.
