Gustav Coverage: Fair Housing group urges GOP to commit to Gulf Coast rebuilding
In a letter to RNC Leadership, the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center, a private nonprofit working to eliminating housing discrimination, urged Republican leaders to commit to Gulf Coast rebuilding as Hurricane Gustav winds ashore in coastal Louisiana.
"Residents of the Gulf Coast need a sustained and public commitment to recovery and rebuilding from government leaders of both major parties," (GNOFHAC) Executive Director James Perry said in a press release. "Given the hard work and sacrifices that both residents of the Gulf Coast and concerned citizens from across the country have made to hurricane recovery since 2005, GOP leaders must make a sustained commitment to rebuilding at the Convention."
In the letter GOP, the GNOFHAC added a call for sustained commitment surrounding the 2005 hurricanes and a new commitment in this hurricane season:
GOP leaders need to ensure that Gulf Coast residents affected by Hurricane Gustav have equitable access to disaster assistance resources in response to Gustav, that residents affected by Katrina and Rita continue to receive the assistance they need to rebuild, and that leaders recommit themselves to fortifying the Gulf Coast against the threat of future hurricane damage.
At the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota Perry ad other advocates are hoping to meet with GOP leaders to discuss the needs of Gulf Coast residents.
